Exceptional Agu in Bundesliga team of the week

Werder Bremen’s Felix Agu has made a remarkable return after a prolonged injury, delivering an impressive performance against Bayer Leverkusen. During the match, Agu initially made an errant pass that seemed too difficult for Oliver Burke to reach, squandering a potential opportunity. However, he quickly redeemed himself by reacting swiftly, regaining possession from Granit Xhaka in the 29th minute. His performance, while not flawless, demonstrated great energy, determination, and effectiveness against the reigning German champions. Sports director Clemens Fritz praised Agu’s efforts, highlighting his defensive stability and active involvement. Given that this was Agu’s first full 90-minute match in four months, his impact on the field was even more commendable.

Agu had been sidelined since November due to knee ligament issues, missing twelve matches before making his return in mid-February during Bremen’s 0:5 defeat against Freiburg. His comeback initially saw limited minutes as a substitute in subsequent games before he gradually built up his playing time. His full match against Leverkusen solidified his return to form, earning recognition from Fritz, who noted Agu’s ability to bounce back from setbacks. Injuries had plagued him throughout the 2022/23 season, and just when he had regained his rhythm, another setback in late 2024 disrupted his progress. However, his latest performance has reaffirmed his bid for a regular starting position, signaling strong competition within the squad.

With new signings Derrick Köhn from Galatasaray and Issa Kaboré from Manchester City, Werder Bremen has added depth in the wing-back positions, making the competition for playing time even tougher. However, Agu has now emerged as the leading choice for the left flank, surpassing his teammates. While both Köhn and Kaboré have performed well, Fritz acknowledged that the coach made the right decision in selecting Agu for the Leverkusen match. As Werder Bremen prepares for their next game against Borussia Mönchengladbach, Agu is expected to start once again, especially with Mitchell Weiser unavailable due to suspension. His versatility allows him to switch to the right side when needed, which could prove beneficial for the team as he aims to solidify his place in the lineup for the rest of the season.
