Nigeria’s football crisis is set for a crucial new chapter as National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko leads a powerful delegation to FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland, tomorrow. The high-level meeting will centre on the leadership vacuum created by the resignation of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) executive committee led by Ibrahim Gusau. While FIFA and CAF officials were initially expected to travel to Abuja for talks with the NSC, the decision to hold the meeting in Zurich has raised expectations that a major solution to the impasse could be reached.
At the heart of the discussions is the possibility of FIFA approving a Normalisation Committee to take charge of Nigerian football, oversee the restructuring of the NFF and ultimately organise fresh elections for a new executive committee. With the current board no longer in place, Emmanuel Ikpeme, the most senior official at the NFF secretariat, has assumed responsibility for the federation’s day-to-day operations. Meanwhile, changes have already begun across the domestic game, with new heads appointed to oversee the NPFL, NNL, NWFL and NLO as Nigerian football awaits a decisive intervention.
