Nwabali and Aina out of Rwanda clash

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has been granted compassionate leave following the passing of his father, as confirmed by team officials to GAANT Football. Nwabali’s father passed away on Thursday, prompting the South Africa-based shot-stopper to step away from national team duties to mourn with his family. Nwabali has been a key figure for the Nigerian national team, serving as the first-choice goalkeeper since the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) earlier this year. His absence will be felt as the Super Eagles prepare for their upcoming match.

In light of Nwabali’s leave, Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye is poised to take over goalkeeping duties for Nigeria in their AFCON qualifier against Rwanda on Monday in Uyo. Okoye, who last donned the national team jersey during the delayed 2021 AFCON in Cameroon, is set to make his return to the Super Eagles lineup. The experienced goalkeeper has steadily rebuilt his career, becoming a reliable presence for his Italian club over the past two seasons. His inclusion in the starting lineup underscores Nigeria’s depth in goalkeeping talent.

Nwabali is not the only player who has departed the national team camp recently. Defender Ola Aina was also granted leave to return to his base earlier in the week. While the Super Eagles will miss these key players, the team remains focused on delivering a strong performance against Rwanda. With Okoye’s proven abilities and the team’s resilience, Nigeria aims to maintain their momentum and uphold their competitive edge in the ongoing AFCON qualifiers.
