The Flamingos have secured their place at this year’s FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco after holding Algeria to a goalless draw in the second leg of their qualifying tie. Having won the first leg comfortably, the Nigerian team advanced with a 4-0 aggregate score. Despite dominating the game and creating more opportunities, the Flamingos were unable to find the back of the net due to wasteful finishing and some misfortune in front of goal.
In addition to facing a determined Algerian side, the Nigerian girls also had to contend with cold, challenging weather conditions in Blida. Late in the game, Algeria came close to a dramatic upset, but their effort was denied by the woodwork just moments before the final whistle. Overall, the Flamingos remained resilient and maintained their advantage to book their ticket to Morocco.
Nigeria’s U17 women’s team made it to the quarterfinals of the 2024 edition of the tournament, where they were eventually knocked out by the USA. Since the competition’s inception in 2008, the Flamingos have consistently qualified for every edition except for the 2018 World Cup in Uruguay. The 2025 tournament in Morocco is set to begin on October 17, promising another opportunity for the team to make a strong showing.
