Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso has confirmed that Victor Boniface will remain with the Bundesliga club after a potential move to Saudi Arabian side Al Nassr collapsed. The Nigerian striker was on the verge of securing a lucrative transfer that would have earned him €15 million per year. However, Al Nassr ultimately decided to sign Aston Villa’s Jhon Duran instead, putting an end to the proposed deal.
Boniface was left out of Leverkusen’s squad for their UEFA Champions League match against Sparta Praha on Wednesday to avoid any complications with the transfer negotiations. Despite this, Alonso reassured fans that the player would resume training the next day and expressed his satisfaction with the outcome. “He will train again tomorrow. I think he will stay with us,” Alonso told ESPN, adding that he was pleased with the decision.
Looking ahead, Boniface could be available for Leverkusen’s upcoming Bundesliga match against Hoffenheim. Alonso emphasized that the striker is comfortable at the club and does not seem unsettled by the situation. Leverkusen currently sits in second place in the Bundesliga standings after 19 matches, trailing Bayern Munich by six points.
