The Super Eagles secure their qualification for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN)

The CHAN Eagles delivered a stellar performance today, decisively defeating arch-rivals Ghana 3-1 in Uyo to secure their spot in the 2024 CHAN tournament. This emphatic victory, which also ensured a 3-1 aggregate win after a goalless first leg in Accra, was a testament to their dominance and determination. The win was particularly sweet, as it avenged previous eliminations by Ghana in the 2009 and 2022 CHAN qualifiers. With this triumph, Nigeria’s home-based squad has confirmed their participation in the delayed 2024 CHAN, set to be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda from February 1.

The match unfolded spectacularly for Nigeria, with Remo Stars fullback Sodiq Ismail breaking the deadlock in the 19th minute by exploiting Ghana’s defensive lapse. Just three minutes later, his teammate and captain, Nduka Junior, capitalized on a loose ball inside the box to double the lead. The Eagles continued to dominate, with Enugu Rangers midfielder Isaac Saviour showcasing exceptional skill as he dispossessed a Ghanaian defender and rounded the goalkeeper to score the third goal. While Ghana managed to pull one back in the 73rd minute through Amankona Stephen, the damage had already been inflicted in the first half, leaving the Black Galaxies unable to mount a comeback. Nigeria’s striker, Sikiru Alimi, came close to adding to the tally, only to be denied by a brilliant save from the Ghanaian goalkeeper.

The game also featured a sentimental moment when 44-year-old Kano Pillars veteran Rabiu Ali made a late substitution appearance, highlighting the team’s blend of youth and experience. Nigeria’s starting lineup in a 4-3-3 formation demonstrated strategic balance and effectiveness, with players like Henry Ozoemena in goal and the midfield trio of Zayyad Musa, Jide Fatokun, and Isaac Saviour orchestrating play. Substitutions in the second half, including Manyo, Ogbole, and Ogunleye, provided fresh legs to secure the victory. This commanding performance underscores the Eagles’ readiness for the CHAN tournament, where they will aim to further assert their dominance on the continental stage.
