The NFF’s technical committee convenes to deliberate on the appointment of a new foreign coach for the Super Eagles.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) technical committee will soon select a new foreign coach to lead the Super Eagles through their challenging campaign for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Officials have disclosed that this decision will be finalized after the holiday season. The Super Eagles are grappling with a precarious position in their qualifying group, necessitating urgent and strategic leadership to rejuvenate their performance. The appointment of the new coach will be a significant step toward addressing these difficulties and steering the team back on track.

The Super Eagles’ journey to the 2026 World Cup resumes in March with two crucial matches. First, they will face group leaders Rwanda in an away game, followed by a home clash against Zimbabwe, who currently sit at the bottom of the group standings. Nigeria’s position, second from the bottom with only three points after four matches, underscores the enormity of the task ahead. These upcoming fixtures present an opportunity to salvage their campaign, but it will require tactical brilliance and psychological resilience, both of which will be expected from the incoming foreign coach.

Sources from GAANT Football have indicated that sponsors will bear the responsibility of financing the new coach’s salary, ensuring the NFF can secure a high-caliber candidate. Meanwhile, NFF technical director Augustine Eguavoen, who is on medical leave in Belgium, has emphasized the urgency of appointing a head coach promptly. Eguavoen, who temporarily led the team to secure qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, understands the critical nature of stability and leadership as the Super Eagles navigate this pivotal period in their history.
