Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr has expressed his optimism that Benin can capitalize on what he sees as potential “small problems” in Nigeria’s defense when they face off in a key 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier this Thursday. This match is crucial for Benin, who are under pressure to secure a victory at their adopted home ground in Abidjan to maintain their position in the standings. Currently, Benin sits in second place with six points, just ahead of Rwanda, who have five points and will also be in action against Libya on the same day. With only two rounds of matches left in the qualification campaign, every point matters for both Benin and Rwanda in the race for AFCON qualification.
Rohr emphasized the significance of experienced players returning to the squad, noting that they could give Benin the edge they need against Nigeria. He highlighted that two of these returnees have been in strong form recently, making their contributions particularly valuable in these decisive upcoming matches. The first of these is goalkeeper Serge Obassa, who joins a strong lineup of three goalkeepers, including Saturnin Allagbé and Marcel Dandjinou. According to Rohr, Obassa’s recent performances have been impressive, and his presence could strengthen Benin’s defensive backbone as they attempt to fend off Nigeria’s attack.
Another key player returning to the squad is Lenny Piringuel, a midfielder who has found his rhythm with his new club, Rouen, and is showing the kind of agility and awareness that could be critical against Nigeria’s high-paced play. Rohr sees Piringuel’s adaptability and recent performances as a valuable asset, especially given the vulnerabilities he believes exist in the Nigerian defense. His hope is that these small weaknesses in Nigeria’s backline, combined with Benin’s revitalized lineup, will give Benin the opportunity to secure a much-needed win and take a decisive step toward AFCON qualification.
